Landlords Ignoring Calls After Move Out. Won’t Return Security Deposit

My wife and I moved from Texas about 2 months ago. We rented a house from someone in our town and signed a 6 month lease. After 5 months, we had to move out early. We had permission from them to leave early. They wanted to us try and find someone to start a new lease we left. We tried but they ended up not going with the person we recommended. The day of the move out, they mentioned to my wife they will send the security deposit via cash app when they get done check out the property.

Fast forward, we move to Georgia. We message them a few times with no luck. Dodging my texts and calls. It’s now been almost 2 months since we’ve moved out. Not a word as been heard from them. Both my wife and I have tried reaching out.

Are we screwed out of our security deposit? Technically we didn’t “finish” our lease but I’ve read they have 30 days to return or at least provide info about the deposit. Is it worth taking to small claims even though I’m out of state? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
