Issue With Lyft

Card image cap

Location: Colorado In the grand scope of things this isn’t a huge deal, but the principle of it is what is bothering me. I took two Lyft rides this past Saturday. At the end of the day the rides totaled out to $88.15. When I initiated the first ride, they put a hold on my debit card for $51.28.

So the way I typically see holds work is the hold amount gets adjusted to the final amount and processed. But what happened with Lyft is the left the hold on my card and charge the final $88.15 as a separate charge.

Now, I don’t keep most of my money in this account. So there was just over enough for the two rides that day. But because they didn’t drop the hold on my card and charged me the full amount on a separate transaction, my account got over drafted.

When I reached out to the bank I was told that Lyft had not released the pending charge and if they didn’t release it I would have to wait something like 9 or 10 days for it to expire to get it back in my account.

So I reach out to Lyft and after talking 5 different people they basically say sorry talk to the bank nothing we can do about it. Might take 5 to 7 business days to get it back.

So my questions are first, is Lyft really allowed to hold more than my final charge amount for that long? How is that fair for the consumer? And second is there anything I can do legally to get them to release it sooner or make sure it doesn’t happen again?

Thanks!
