Iowa: Dog Attack

Card image cap

Hey all. This afternoon, in the state of Iowa into which I just moved in, I was walking my golden retriever on leash in a residential area near my apartment sector. In a private residence a few buildings to the right of a public sidewalk, a man was playing with his two pointer dogs. One of the dogs became visibly excited/aggravated on the view of my dog. As there was a fence and several buildings in separation, I kept walking peacefully as my dog did not mind the barking several feet away from us.

As we walked down about half a block down, I hear the owner scream his dogs name. I also see the dog has visibly jumped the height of the fence and is running in full speed towards me and my dog. The dog immediately growled and attempted to bite both my dog and I. My dog immediately retreated between my legs, allowing me to physically deter the dog and physically separate the unknown dog from my own. I was equipped with a pocket knife in the absolute worst case, but a few kicks to the dog prevented any escalation.

I come from the state of IL, and every first time offense usually leads no where with local authorities. So I didn’t call, but I have all details, addresses, and information regarding the situation documented.

After walking back, I drove around to find the location to document addresses once my dog was secure at home. The man, ironically walking his dog, saw me. In a recorded conversation, I simply warned the man that while I don’t have bad blood with him, this situation was completely uncalled for, and next time I will alert authorities. The man lied claiming no such thing happened, provided me a crisp middle finger, and urged my “stupid ass” to call.

I get this is a first time offense. From a legal standpoint, I tried to cover my bases to deal with this uncomfortable situation the smoothest I could.

In the instance this continues, or god forbid escalate, do I have legal recourse to alert authorities of this situation (animal control,, etc)? Or should I simply avoid that area and act like this didn’t occur?

Thank you all in advance.
