Inheritance From Canada To Europe (portugal)

Good afternoon, my uncle passed away in Canada, without a will, in Bradford, in the province of Ontario on May 28th of last year.
My uncle had no children or spouse and only one brother who lives in Portugal, together with me. When we went to Canada, a lawyer was hired to deal with the entire process of collecting my uncles belongings and money from his bank accounts.
The lawyer informed us that the Ontario law requires the person receiving the inheritance to be a resident of that same province, so the lawyer gave us the option to pass my uncle’s assets to a friend of him there in Canada. That person must then return this amount to the family.
The point is that we are talking about people we barely know and there is always the suspicion of being deceived, since this representative can appropriate the assets if he acts in bad faith.
Any suggestions on what should be done? My father has a lawyer both in Portugal and in Canada, but the process is really complicated. I greatly appreciate suggestions.
