I Want To Make Food Videos About A Restaurant My Grandparents Used To Own/operate

Card image cap

Location: New Hampshire

Hi all,

This isn’t as serious as many of the other posts in this subreddit, but I’m hoping to get some clarification otherwise.

As mentioned in the title, my Grandparents used to own a restaurant in NYC. After they sold the place and retired abroad many years ago, they kept some memorabilia of the place, including photos, news articles, and some of the menus.

Having a love for food and admiration of my Grandfather’s life as a chef, I wanted to do something fun on the side and slowly cook my way through the menu. I’d essentially be making videos and using the recipes he provides me with (which are verbal suggestions at best) and posting them online to TikTok/Instagram and whatnot.

As of today, the restaurant is still in business in NYC under different management. It operates under the same name. I’ve checked and their menu is also visually different in addition to changes in specific food items sold.

Would I need to request permission to show the old menu that I have, and would I get into trouble sharing the recipes/advice he gives me about certain menu items? The last thing I want to do is post something about the restaurant they wouldn’t like if they saw it.

If there’s anything else I am missing that would also get me into trouble or something that would require restaurant permission, please let me know!

Thanks for your time r/legaladvice.
