Fundraiser Grade

We live in Florida and our kids go to the local public high school. A month ago one of our kids brought home a fundraising calendar from a class at school and was told they would need to solicit donations/sponsors for each day of the week and the proceeds would go towards sponsoring families in need in the community this holiday season. The donations are based on choosing a day of the month and paying that amount. So if you select November 3 and November 7, you donate $10 total. The total value of the calendar is $465 of someone were to get their entire calendar sponsored.
It’s a great goal and fundraiser but this is where it gets tricky and what I’m questioning. The classroom teacher said it was mandatory for students to do this fundraiser. When pressed on how much each student would need to raise in order to “get a good grade on the fundraiser,” the teacher responded that they believed half of the calendar would be fair. In perspective that’s an expectation that each child raise $233 in order to get a good grade on the project. How is this ethical? It’s essentially purchasing a grade. In addition not every student has the means or the support group or finances to be able to raise this type of money. Many are tapped out at this point and tying money to grades is really disheartening and borderline wrong. Many parents have written to the teach and the teacher has not responded to any of the emails. The teacher did give grades out for this fundraiser. My child received a 90% because they only raised $80.
Is this fair? Is this legal? Is this right?
