Ex Wants Me To Pay Him Back And Is Thinking Of Taking Legal Action Against Me.

My now ex and I have been dating for 4 years and we broke up due to some huge red flags I noticed over the last few months. Things were radio silent for awhile and I thought that would be the end of things. I was wrong.

About 4 days ago, he called me and said that he needs me to look through my transaction history and return ALL of the money he’s ever sent me. I told him that’s there’s no way I can do that right now as I’m not working and I just put the remainder of my funds into my next college semester (I did not receive a lot of financial aid so the costs were quite hefty). He stated that he doesn’t care, he just wants the money back because he never sends cash to anyone for any reason. I told him that the money he sent was of his own volition because I never asked for any of it, he just randomly sent it at times. He told me he wouldn’t argue about this any longer and if I don’t pay him back, he’ll take me to court for the sum.

I went through my history yesterday and according to what he sent me, I would owe him $2,100. I don’t have those kinds of funds right now and there’s no way I’ll be able to get that in the amount of time that’s he’s requesting it. Am I truly obligated to pay him back? Can he really take me to court over this? Are there any actions I need to start taking to protect myself in this? We live in different states— I’m in PA and he’s in TN— so I would imagine it would be difficult to sue me over, but I’m simply not sure and losing my mind over this.
