Do I Really Have To Stop For A Random Parking Attendant When I'm Riding My Bike In The Lane (detroit, Mi)?
Hi everyone, I'm cycling in Detroit and have a safety issue I'm hoping to get some legal clarity on.
I regularly ride on a side street near Little Caesars Arena, which has a bike lane. I keep getting stopped by private parking lot attendants.
The attendant will step out into the bike lane, stop me (the cyclist who is trying to travel straight), and then wave a car from the main street across the bike lane into their private lot entrance.
This is causing traffic backups for cyclists and serious near-misses. I want to know where I stand legally before I confront them or file a formal complaint:
Do these private employees have any legal right to step onto a public road and stop through traffic in the bike lane just to help their customers park?
When a car is turning into a private lot, doesn't the person already on the public street have the right of way? Are they allowed to override that?
If this person is not a police officer, am I actually required by law to stop for them?
I want to know if I'm legally obligated to follow their instructions. Thanks for any guidance!
