Do I Need To Go Through Legal Channels To Get Things From My Stepdad That He Said To Leave Me In A Suicide Note (not A Legal Will) That My Mother Is Refusing To Give To Me
My stepfather took his life about a week ago. Without getting to too much detail, he left letters and basically said he wanted everything he had to go to me since his son (my stepbrother) and my mother were pretty much zero contact with him after really bad conflict on their end. It wasn't like a legal will or anything, it was a suicide note. He had lots of money in an account that he wrote he wanted me to use on schooling, he had a car (we both shared a love for muscle cars, he had one that had my name engraved on the front seat), and he wrote basically for me to keep everything, even clothes, if I wanted them for memories or something, like watches and his colognes. Im honestly numb, not in the mood to argue with my birth giver. She refuses to give anything to me or let me come to the house to get any of it because she said im the reason he's dead basically (she's an idiot). My dad is saying he can go with my aunt and essentially force everything from the house if I really need, but I guess im asking if I need to go thru a lawyer to get the things? Because I know a suicide note is not technically a legal document. I feel helpless and I really don't know what to do. I live in Vermont. I moved here from Australia (i dont know if that matters) as did my whole family, but we've been here for a while so it's not like he's passed and this incident occurred in another country. If u can tell by the way im writing idk what im doing. So any advice is rily important for me right now. Thanks to anyone who can help!
