Debt Collector Refuses To Verify Debt

Having an issue with a debt collector in South Dakota.
They're claiming my wife owes several thousand in medical debt, they're refusing to verify because they claim to have sent a letter years ago that we only had 30 days to respond to. The first contact we know of was a phone call from a random number my wife answered.
We open all our mail but have serious issues with our mail service delivering to the wrong address, we get out neighbors mail routinely and they get ours. It's not impossible it was delivered to the wrong address and we never saw it.
That said it seems ridiculous that they don't have to give us any information about the debt just because they (supposedly) sent a single letter years ago. The charges don't even make sense and we really think it's an error.
