Company Stealing User Credentials And Logging In To Their Financial Account.

Card image cap

I work at a relatively small company in the IT department.

Recently an employee was fired from our accounting department because it was believed that they may have been stealing.

Our legal and accounting teams asked IT to log into the alleged theif's old computer and see if cached credentials could be used to access this person's personal email and venmo accounts. Which did end up happening, and to the best of my understanding the accounting department now has this user's credentials.

I know nothing about law, but this gave me major red flags ethically speaking. Is this something that an organization can do? It just feels super wrong.

I am in the US, just for context.
