Car Dealership Possibly Lied To Me About My Car, Convincing Me To Trade It For A New One.
Location: Indiana, United States
I don't really know if there's any legal action that can be taken, but I'm feeling extremely suspicious lately about a recent series of transactions i had with a local car dealership.
About a month ago, i was driving my old car (Kia soul) home from work when it suddenly stalled and wouldn't turn on again. So i had it towed to a local mechanic, who held it for 5 days before telling me it "Needed a whole new engine" and then literally couldnt tell me WHY it needed a new engine. I tried asking for specifics and all i could get out of them was "I don't know. it just needs a new engine."
Realizing this mechanic was full of it, I decided to have it towed to the nearest kia dealership and have their service center look at it. I figured that if anyone could tell me what was wrong with it, it would be the service team for the dealership that sells this make of cars. So i dropped it off, and I explained the situation, and I also mentioned to them that the other mechanic told me it needed a new engine. Though in retrospect i probably should have withheld that specific bit of information.
After about 3 days, they called me to tell me that it DID indeed need a whole new engine, because "This one is full of sludge and it wont even turn over". This sounded weird to me, because how could it be full of sludge? I have never missed an oil change, and i was always on top of my vehicle maintenance schedule. But on the other hand, this is the second person to tell me it needed a new engine, so at the time, i just accepted that they were being honest.
So i asked them what it would cost to replace and they quoted me $11,000.
After a mild heart attack at the 5 digit service quote, I decided that if i was going to spend that kind of money, i might as well replace the car. So i asked them what they could offer me in terms of a trade in value for the vehicle. After a day of waiting they called me with an appraisal of $900. I guess it was better than nothing. So i took the offer and bought a new car through their sales department.
Well a few weeks later, i got an email from Carfax about an "Updated Service record" on my old car, which makes sense, I expected the dealership to do some kind of maintenance on the vehicle. However, suspiciously missing from the service report was anything about an engine replacement. According to the service record, they replaced the wipers, brakes, tires, and did an oil change. That's it. So then i went to the dealerships website, and there i see my old car being sold for $14,000!!! I know its mine because it matches the VIN number in my carfax report, and theres mild cosmetic damage in the pictures in the exact same spots as my old car!
Now I'm sitting here feeling like the biggest sucker in the world, because even if i didn't buy a new car, they STILL tried to swindle me for $11,000 on an engine that, according to carfax, ultimately just needed an oil change. And if it DIDNT need an engine replacement, they heavily under appraised the trade in value of my vehicle.
If i can prove they lied to me, is there anything i can do?
