(va) Landlord Claiming Carpet Is Ruined And Requires Complete Replacement

The landlord is a company called Newport Village and they’re claiming that the carpets are ruined and require full replacement. They want $750 to replace the carpet. Before I left, I paid their cleaning team $230 to clean up the place according to their community standards. When I requested evidence of carpet damage, they sent me the pictures that their renovation team took after they took apart the kitchen and bathroom with their shoes on earlier that day, so the photos they took are misleading, including stains they created. If I need to pay additional for carpet cleanup, I’m okay with that but entire carpet replace seems outrageous especially with stains left by their renovation team after I moved out.
I’ve lived there for two years with no shoes allowed beyond the shoe closet by the door. They’re threatening to send to collections. Is it possible their renovation team destroyed the carpet and now they’re trying to collect from me? How should I handle this? I don’t know if this is worth hiring a lawyer for but I don’t want to pay for their renovations.
I originally posted in the renter subreddit with pics from the landlord company and the final pics I took before leaving on the last day. Everything was pretty clean showing just furniture imprints. Thank you in advance.
