[ny] Help With Training Repayment Clause! Is It Possible To Leave Without Paying??

Card image cap

I was desperate a month ago, and ended up signing with a company that stipulates that I agree to work with the company for a minimum of 90 weeks. Otherwise:

If you chose to resign before this point, you agree to repay X inc, training fees as per the following schedule:  If you resign within the first week, there are no training costs to repay  If you resign after week 1 to week 90 you must repay $8000 Training fees will be repayable in full prior to your last day of employment and the company reserve the right to deduct all or part of the monies owing from any final net pay payment, with any balance owing payable immediately

That's all the contract mentions. I don't have $8,000. It also says that despite being in an at will state, I am obligated to provide a month's notice..

Why do I want to leave? I signed up by responding to a job listing with a specific job title. I was being trained up until recently in that title, and literally in the span of 30 minutes, I was told that they would take most of the cohort and change their job title and train them in something else. There were talks of one on one meetings where it was possible to voice whether we wanted to join the new program, but that never happened, and I was told I was switching over to the new training program.

I've been applying to other positions and landed something closer to what I'm interested in.

Can I do anything?
