(illinois, Usa) Someone Else Deposited A Check That Was Made Out To Me. I Was Told I Now Have To Cooperate With The Person Who Wrote The Check And Sue The Bank. Is This True?

Happy to clarify anything in the comments!

A landlord wrote me about a $1,000 check (return of security deposit).

I never receive the check. Take him to court over it, turns out someone else I've never met before did deposit it (stolen from mail?).

The landlord is supposed to issue me a new check.

However, his attorney told me that in order for the landlord to recoup his original $1,000, I must cooperate and act as a plaintiff (alongside this landlord) in suing the bank.

I'm hesitant because: 1. I don't want my name attached to this lawsuit. I'm worried when you Google my name that it'll come up. 2. Am I going to be responsible for legal fees? 3. I can't take more time off work for court dates.

However, I'm worried that if I don't cooperate, I could get sued for the money, as my lack of cooperation makes him unable to sue the bank effectively?

All of this feels really unfair. My main concern is the fact that I can't take more time off right now from work to attend court. Also, am I going to get stuck with any court costs? No agreement was sent my way or anything, so would I ask for an agreement that no court costs would be my responsibility?
