Zdenek was the son of Vaclav and Frantiska (Kratochvílová) Hronik. His father was a minor. Zdenek's father and oldest brother were part of the Nazi firing squad on June 1942. Along with his siblings, Zdenek was deported to Lodz then to Chelmno where they were gassed in a concealed van among other children from Lidice.
