The world has changed a lot in the last four years, and for better or for worse, that has greatly impacted our travel plans. For several summers since 2020, we found our vacations foiled—whether it was travel restrictions, the closures of our favorite hotels, or, ultimately, catching up on a never-ending backlog of weddings and other delayed social engagements. As a result, many of us were stuck at home and stuck on the grid when we really needed to disconnect more than ever. Omicron, epsilon, whatever-cron variants notwithstanding, it finally feels like this year, the pandemic is firmly in our rearview mirror, and the classic destinations we knew and loved before 2020 are back, fully rejuvenated—and ready to help us disconnect from our day-to-day realities.

No one is more in need of a digital detox than the always-on warriors of tech. “People are itching to get back out there,” said Antony Merkel, founder of Peridot Travel, a travel advisory that counts a number of Silicon Valley and venture capital executives as clients. “It’s a combination of post-Covid ‘revenge travel’ and bucket-list travel taking a higher priority.”

Merkel’s clients, he says, are craving “something more exotic,” but without the logistical hassle of going too far. And that’s precisely what we’ve gathered here for your consideration: Places you can explore if you only have one week (or less), and that feel especially apropos for this post-pandemic moment. If you haven’t made your summer vacation plans yet, what are you waiting for?
