These Airports And Airlines Officially Have The Crappiest Wi-fi

After getting off the plane and trying to connect to the internet that may not have been available while in the air, the last thing many people want to do is have to keep swiping the Wi-Fi toggle in a phone or computer's settings.

Whether over security concerns or to avoid this frustration, many travelers prefer not to use airport Wi-Fi at all and either use only their phone or connect their laptop to its data Hotspot.

By looking at the ratings that travelers have left through Skytrax, technology website ElectronicsHub identified both airlines and airports that have either strong or weak connectivity.

U.S. airline with the worst Wi-Fi is hardly a surprise

Airlines with particularly strong in-flight Wi-Fi service tended to be in Asia. Indonesia's Garuda Indonesia, South Korea's Asian Airlines and Japan's ANA All Nippon Airways  (ALNPF)  came out on top as the airlines with the fastest and most stable internet connections.

While not a single U.S. airline landed in the top ten, Miramar, Fla.-based Spirit Airlines  (SAVE)  had the fifth worst Wi-Fi out of all the airlines the technology platform looked at globally. Thai Lion Air, Philippines' Cebu Pacific and Hungary's Wizz Air  (WZZAF)  rounded out the top three for the most customer complaints about the Wi-Fi.

"Budget airline, Spirit is the lowest-rated U.S. airline for Wi-Fi, scoring 1.11," write the report's authors. "Some passengers complain at its additional cost, while one customer claims to have paid for Wi-Fi access only to find ‘they didn’t even have Wi-Fi and wouldn’t let me use my credit for food or drinks on the flights.’”

When it comes to airports with the best Wi-Fi, smaller airports tended to fare much better than major hubs. Slovenia's Ljubljana Airport (LJU) had the most satisfied travelers while the top three were rounded out by Hong Kong Airport (HKG) and Helsinki Vantaa Airport (HEL).

Airports with the worst Wi-Fi are not where you think

Both in Tokyo, Haneda Airport (HND) and Narita Airport (NRT) took the respective fourth and fifth places while the U.S. airports that made the top 20 are Indianapolis International Airport (IND) in 10 place and Portland International Airport (PDX) in 13th place.

The worst airport Wi-Fi, in turn, was at Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh Airport (SSH) and Hurghada Airport (HRG) and Nigeria's Lagos Airport (LOS). The U.S. can boast of not having a single one of its airports in the world's 20 worst when it comes to Wi-Fi. Most of the country's airports landed squarely in the middle range although the airports in Indianapolis, Portland, Tampa and Canada's Vancouver came closer to the top and have some of the best airport Wi-Fi in North America.

"Eight out of the top ten North American airports for Wi-Fi are in the U.S., with Canada’s Vancouver and Calgary Airports also on board," write the report's authors. "Top-rated of all is Indianapolis Airport, which made the headlines in 2015 when the Wi-Fi was upgraded to 40 megabits per second (Mbps), making it the fastest in the country. This record is now held by Fort Lauderdale's Hollywood International Airport Terminal 3 (157.6Mbps).”
