French president to leave for archipelago on Tuesday night after a week of deadly unrest on Pacific territory

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, will travel to New Caledonia, the Pacific territory where there has been a week of deadly riots sparked by electoral changes imposed by the government in Paris.

In a sign of the French authorities’ belief that reinforced security and emergency measures were bringing the violence under control, Macron would be leaving mainland France on Tuesday night, the government’s spokesperson, Prisca Thevenot, said.
