What George Kittle told Brock Purdy after 49ers QB's second interception in win originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

If George Kittle isn’t panicking, then why should anyone else?

And even though 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw three first-half interceptions on Monday night, the star tight end wasn’t particularly worried.

That composure paid off, as Purdy and San Francisco settled down in the second half to cement a 20-9 win over the Carolina Panthers at Levi’s Stadium. After the game, Kittle was asked if he had to talk to Purdy amid the quarterback’s early struggles.

“He threw an interception tonight? Hmm,” Kittle replied with his typical dry humor. “I never said anything after the first one. Second one, I just said, ‘Dude, just take a deep breath, man. You know, you’ve been here, you’re good. Just breathe, let it out, move on to the next play.’

“That’s it. He’s a professional. He knows what he’s doing.”

Did Purdy’s third interception require any further comments from Kittle?

“No, I think Kyle [Shanahan] had some,” Kittle said. “He’s fine. I’m not too worried about Brock.”

Meanwhile, running back Christian McCaffrey explained why he kept totally quiet throughout the game.

“No … nobody needs to, he’s a professional and a really good football player. Nobody needs to tell him anything,” McCaffrey told reporters postgame. “I think it’s like, if I make a mistake, I know I make a mistake. Or if I have a drop, you know, somebody says, ‘Catch the ball’ — it’s like it makes you want to knock him out.

“There’s really nothing to say. You just keep on playing. It’s a long game and anything can happen, so you don’t say anything to him.”

That relatively hands-off attitude towards Purdy certainly . The fourth-year quarterback completed all nine of his passes in the second half, allowing the 49ers to protect their lead and coast to a win on a dominant night for their defense.
