Brandon Aiyuk‘s rollercoaster 49ers tenure took another wild turn Friday.
The 49ers voided the future money on Aiyuk’s contract during training camp, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, signaling that the star wide receiver won’t return to the organization after this season.
Source: The 49ers officially voided Brandon Aiyuk’s future guaranteed money back in training camp for failure to live up to terms of his contract. As @MikeSilver and @DMRussini report, this appears to make it highly unlikely Aiyuk remains with the organization beyond this season. https://t.co/fiYnnFWuH3

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Mike Silver first reported on Friday, citing sources, that the 49ers became frustrated with Aiyuk missing meetings and other team activities, leading the organization to decide to void his guaranteed money for the 2026 NFL season.
And believe it or not, Aiyuk isn’t fighting the 49ers’ decision.
Russini and Silver reported, citing multiple league sources, that Aiyuk told the NFL Players’ Association that he didn’t want to file a grievance against the 49ers for voiding his guaranteed money.
Per Spotrac.com, Aiyuk’s option bonus for the 2026 season was $24.935 million and became fully guaranteed this past April 1.
To receive his 2026 option bonus of $24.9 million, Aiyuk’s contract states he must adhere to all provisions of the contract, including active participation in meetings and other activities as “instructed by the club without unexcused interruption and suspensions.”
Sources told NBC Sports Bay Area that Aiyuk incurred numerous team-imposed fines this season.
The last few years have been a soap opera for Aiyuk and the 49ers. The summer of 2024 was marred by a contract dispute and trade request before a four-year, $120 million deal was agreed to right before the start of last season.
Coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons and a Second-Team All-Pro selection, much was expected of Aiyuk last season. But seven games into the campaign, he sustained a torn ACL and he still hasn’t returned to the field as the 49ers prepare for their Week 12 “Monday Night Football” matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
Aiyuk has been on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list but the 49ers have declined to open his practice window over the last few weeks.
Based on the reporting by Maiocco, Russini and Silver, it appears Aiyuk won’t wear a 49ers uniform again.
Russini and Silver are reporting that several members of the 49ers organization are holding out hope that the sides can patch things up enough so that Aiyuk could play again this season, but multiple sources told The Athletic reporters that they didn’t see a truce coming together.
The 49ers selected Aiyuk with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, developed him into an All-Pro wide receiver and signed him to a long-term contract extension.
In theory, everything that was supposed to happen in the process did.
But somewhere along the line, things went south between Aiyuk and the 49ers, and now the end of their partnership is on the horizon.
