Patriots rookie Will Campbell believed to have MCL sprain: Report originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Will Campbell suffered a serious injury Sunday, but the New England Patriots may have avoided a worst-case scenario.

Campbell is “believed to have suffered an MCL sprain” in his right knee, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning, adding that the rookie offensive tackle potentially could go on injured reserve with a designation to return after a minimum of four weeks.

Campbell is set to have an MRI on his knee Monday to get further clarity on his injury, per Rapoport.

The rookie lineman suffered the injury late in the third quarter of the Patriots’ 26-20 win over the Bengals when a Cincinnati player appeared to incidentally land on his right leg as he blocked for running back TreVeyon Henderson. Campbell had to be carted off the field and didn’t return.

The Patriots have five games remaining in their regular season, so a best-case scenario for New England would be Campbell missing the next four games but returning for the team’s season finale against the Miami Dolphins in Week 18 and being healthy for the playoffs.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed Monday morning on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Showthat Campbell won’t play in New England’s upcoming game against the New York Giants on Monday night.

“That injury is probably going to be more than a week or two,” Vrabel added.

Backup offensive tackle Vederian Lowe filled in for Campbell in Sunday’s game and likely will be the team’s starting left tackle in Campbell’s absence. Lowe may have his hands full Monday night, as the Giants boast a strong pass rush led by Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns and Abdul Carter.

The Patriots have a bye week after facing New York, then have matchups with the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets and Dolphins to close the regular season. They currently lead the AFC with a 10-2 record, so they have a bit of breathing room in Campbell’s absence.

Still, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft has been rock-solid as Drake Maye’s blind-side protector, so it’s paramount that New England gets him back for the postseason.
