Jets Give Up Halftime Lead To Lose To Ravens, 23-10, After Lackluster Second Half

The Jets may not have won this week, but they put together one of their best defensive halves of the season. However, the Ravens got going after halftime to keep the momentum of their postseason push going.

New York had a rare halftime lead after holding the Ravens to just 72 yards of offense. Tyrod Taylor’s 13-yard touchdown pass to John Metchie III gave the Jets a 7-3 advantage.

Baltimore took control in the third quarter, as a pair of two-yard touchdown runs by Derrick Henry gave them a 17-7 lead, although the Jets cut the lead to 17-10 on a Nick Folk field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Tyler Loop’s second field goal of the game restored the Ravens’ two-score advantage at 20-10 on the ensuing possession.

With 6:47 to go, the Jets were about to have first and goal inside the two-yard line, but Breece Hall lost a fumble to essentially put an end to New York’s comeback bid.

Another Loop field goal in the last minute provided the final margin.

Here are the key takeaways...

- Taylor did a solid, if unspectacular job as Justin Fields’ replacement under center to end up with 222 passing yards. He was mostly successful in the quick passing game but made a few plays with his legs to keep the chains moving. Having settled down after his first attempt was almost intercepted, Taylor’s biggest mistake was taking a third-down sack that prevented the Jets from attempting a field goal before halftime. His lone interception was on a desperation deep shot with five seconds left.

- One lineup change saw defensive tackle Jowon Briggs starting for the first time. He showed up in the first half with an impressive sack of Lamar Jackson, his third of the season.

- Head coach Aaron Glenn’s decision-making might be second-guessed after the Jets turned the ball over on downs in their own half in between the two Ravens touchdowns in the third quarter. That was too risky, and the Jets were punished when Taylor’s fourth-down pass was incomplete and the Ravens scored again a few minutes later. He may not have taken the same risk if it weren’t a meaningless game in terms of the standings, though.

- The Jets continued to feature the newcomers Metchie and Adonai Mitchell in the passing game, and each made a few nice plays as they combined for 107 yards and a touchdown on eight catches. Mitchell looked more of a threat this week after he dropped three passes in his Jets debut last Thursday.

- Rookie cornerback Azareye’h Thomas got some valuable experience going against a legendary receiver with a ton of experience in DeAndre Hopkins. He had a few rough moments in terms of penalties and a missed tackle, but also made some positive plays as he no doubt impressed the veteran with his physical and competitive play.

- New York’s players and coaches have talked at length about trying to involve Hall more in the passing game, and they did that to good effect on Sunday as he had 74 yards on four catches. This included a spectacular 40-yard catch and run. He also had an impressive blitz pick-up to set up a Taylor first down completion. However, his fumble was a costly error as Marlon Humphrey ripped the ball away as he tried to back his way into the end zone.

Game MVP: Ravens RB Derrick Henry

New York did a good job of keeping Henry quiet in the first half, but he had a productive second half with 70 yards from scrimmage and the two decisive touchdowns. He also passed three hall of famers to move to 12th on the all-time rushing list.  He ended up with 89 yards from scrimmage on 23 touches.
