The New York Giants have made another move with their coaching staff after another late-game collapse.
The team has fired defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, interim head coach Mike Kafka announced on Monday. Outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen will serve as interim defensive coordinator.
“My decision,” Kafka said Monday, via ESPN. “My decision to make this move.
“… The results just weren’t where we wanted them to be, and so Charlie is going to step up for us and rally the group. The defensive staff will rally around Charlie and put together a great plan. I got a lot of confidence in the room and a lot of confidence in our staff to do that.”
Bowen’s firing comes the morning after the Giants fell 34-27 to the Detroit Lions in overtime. New York had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before the Lions tied the game in regulation, scored on the first play from scrimmage in overtime and sacked Giants QB Jameis Winston on a fourth down to close out the game.
Blown leads have been a recurring theme for the Giants this season, as they have already given away five double-digit fourth quarter leads through 12 weeks.
Bowen joined the former head coach Brian Daboll’s staff in 2023 after spending six seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Daboll was fired two weeks ago, vaulting Kafka from offensive coordinator into the interim head coach role.
The Giants now sit at 2-10 on the year heading into a Monday Night Football matchup against the New England Patriots. If the season ended today, the Giants would own the No. 2 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
