The Russian government detained a U.S. soldier last week on charges of theft, according to a U.S. official.

The soldier, a staff sergeant who is stationed in South Korea, was arrested last Thursday, said the official, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive incident. The soldier had traveled to Russia to meet a woman, possibly his girlfriend, the official said.

The State Department is in touch with the Russian government about the case, the official said, adding that the soldier has been given a pretrial detention until July 1.

White House spokesperson John Kirby said the U.S. is “aware of the case,” but would not comment further.

NBC first reported the news. An Army spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Alexander Ward contributed to this report.
