Newsom Will Rally Democrats In Texas On Heels Of Redistricting Win
SACRAMENTO, California — Gavin Newsom will headline a rally in Texas on Saturday alongside Lone Star state House members and dignitaries — an event designed as an aggressive show of force in the wake of California Democrats’ resounding gerrymander victory on Tuesday.
Newsom, a likely 2028 presidential candidate, also returned $3 million from his ballot measure account to the House Majority PAC, the flagship Democratic-aligned super PAC and a partner in California’s Proposition 50, for the committee to help fund redistricting efforts in other states.
The California governor’s appearance in the belly of the Republican beast comes amid an escalating arms race over congressional line drawing that started with Texas’ GOP-led redistricting and continued with California’s response — a campaign that heavily featured as its bogeymen President Donald Trump and red state Republicans.
“California stepped up. Now, we are taking this fight across the country — helping Democrats in other states push back against Trump’s election rigging,” Newsom said in a statement to POLITICO.
At the rally, Newsom will emphasize not just the recent campaign success, but also refocus on the fight ahead in the 2026 midterms and what he calls the preservation of democracy writ large. In the hours and days since Newsom and Democrats’ victory, the governor urged Democrats in Maryland, Colorado, Illinois and New York to step up their redistricting efforts — a challenge answered by the governors of Maryland and Illinois, the latter of which pledged to engage should Indiana Republicans forge ahead with a redraw.
The California governor previously rallied with Texas Democratic state lawmakers in Sacramento when they fled their state in a failed attempt to prevent a vote on a Republican gerrymander there. He has reveled in his visits to deeply Republican areas in the past, too, traveling to red swaths of South Carolina and placing billboards in red states advertising California as an abortion sanctuary following the fall of Roe v. Wade.
He has frequently blasted Texas’ Republican governor, Greg Abbott, on social media and in ads in Texas newspapers.
