Was Paying Payments For A Car To Someone, Car Wasn't Registered In My Name Yet And He Has Now Deceased

So, never experienced this before. I know I'll be calling the DMV tomorrow of what I'll need to do but thought I'd post here to see if someone has experienced this or can give me advice of what actions I'll need to take or be wary of.. I still owed him $400 also for the vehicle... We had no contracts or papers etc of me purchasing it. I did get the car insured in my name and he removed his.. Not be morbid but does this mean it's paid off then? Do I continue the payment to someone else? Please help!
