Tenant Is Ending Lease Because He Is Butthurt My Boyfriend Left His Company

My boyfriend, Alex, subleases an apartment from a tenant. The tenant used to be his boss, and his name is John. The unit is rent-stabilized. Alex signed the lease with John for a year, which ends July 31st, 2024. John said he only was subleasing to Alex because Alex used to work for him, but now he wants the apartment back to sublet to friends. I live with Alex and have been receiving mail there for a year. This is my home! John knows we both just celebrated our college graduation this week, and I have work planned. The apartment is in NYC, in Chelsea. I have bought so much furniture, and have so many memories here. We wanted to stay for years. John told my boyfriend Alex he only decided to sublease the apartment to use because Alex worked for him, yet that was in January and he never mentioned that until today where he gave us 56 days notice to move out. I am not able to move out on July 31st, I am a researcher at Yale this summer. Main point, John never got the lease approved by the landlord, so he is illegally subletting it to Alex. I was not on the lease ever. I would like to stay in the apartment, legally. John is ghosting us now, he was butt hurt all this time and we never knew. We want to go to the landlord directly and ask him to lease to us.

How can we get the landlord to give the lease to us, and what are our options legally?
