Put In A Request For A Reasonable Accommodation For A Chair At Work, Was Told To Stand For Customers Anyway Because It Was Disrespectful To Them.
Location: Ohio. I work as a cashier. I put in the request for a chair through the proper channels. I have a disability and the paperwork from my doctor to back it up filed with work. I can stand, but doing so for too long seriously aggravates my medical condition. I was told by my direct store manager that I have to stand while cashing out customers because it's disrespectful not to. She said that I can only use my chair while there are no customers around, but it's pretty much a constant flow of customers the entire time I'm at work because we are a very busy store. Sitting does not hinder my ability to cash out customers for the most part, but I still stand for difficult transactions. Although even those transactions would probably be easier if the chair they provided me was a little taller and not just one that was already in the break area.
Am I allowed to continue using my chair as needed? Standing too long does interfere with my ability to do my job well.
