My Company Did Not Take Federal Taxes Out And Continue To Make Mistakes Regarding My W4.

So I’ve been with my current company for a year and a half now. Went to file my taxes earlier this year only to find out that I owe $4600 because they never took Federal Taxes out. My W4 was a digital form and they’re saying I claimed Tax Exempt for when I was hired but I’m certain that I didn’t, they sent me a picture of it but it’s just a small checkbox that reads “Tax Exempt” everything I read online also mentions that there are further forms that need to be filled out to file Tax Exempt which I did not. I tried to talk to my HR and they basically told me that there couldn’t have been a mistake and that’s what I filed. So I filled out another W4 and was having them taking out $150 additional, well instead of additional now they’re just taking out $150. I insured I filled the form out correctly so it seems to be a mistake on their end. Which makes me think that maybe they did mess up my tax status initially. I just don’t know if it would be beneficial to speak to a lawyer. I’m in New Jersey also.
