Indigent, Relocating, And Title Ad Valorem Tax

Card image cap

Location: Georgia

I bought my new car near the end of 2023. At the time, I could afford the car. Plus I was anticipating the usual end-of-year bonus and a raise in the following months.

However, within a few weeks of purchasing the car, I had multiple unexpected medical events and was also laid off. I spent all my savings trying to stay afloat over the next year. Although I finally got a new job this year, I am completely broke now with massive debt and negative networth.

I can't afford rent anymore, so earlier this year when my lease expired, I moved in with a family member in a different state (Georgia). I use my car to commute 90 miles to work and back, and there is no public transit.

Now my vehicle's registration will expire in a couple of months. It looks like to register it with my family's address in Georgia, I will have to pay a Title Ad Valorem Tax at 7% of the vehicle's fair market value. It looks like it will cost me ~$1800.

I can't afford this. My salary is literally a couple hundred dollars above the poverty line. I am already barely getting by trying to keep up with existing financial obligations and medical expenses. But I also can't go to work and get paid if I can't drive my car.

I saw the rate can possibly be lowered to 5%, but I can't afford that either.

Is there anything I can legally do to keep my car and register it without paying the TAVT?
