I Was Left A Trust Fund

Card image cap

My grandfather passed away nearly 22 years ago this year. A year after he passed a will arrived in the mail. It stated he had set up a family trust. I was to get 4 shares of the trust after he and my step-grandmother passed. Never heard anything more, or received anything else regarding his will. Fast forward 22 years later- my grandmother passed away 2 weeks ago. The executor of my grandfather’s will (his only living sister) is being tight lipped.( My grandmother wouldn’t even discuss the will with any of us. His will shocked a lot of people) I do know the executor arrived back in the state where my grandparents lived to meet with a probate attorney regarding his will. The attorney that wrote my grandfather’s will has since passed. I received a phone call from my grandmother’s daughter, asking for my personal info, ss number, full name, address- but wouldn’t tell me why. Another aunt mentioned it was for an insurance policy my step-grandmother took out for all of her grandkids. My step aunt urged me to just sign all the paper work as it starts arriving.

So what happens next? Does my trust fund get released after my grandma’s estate is settled? I was told I her estate is currently in probate court. How do death insurance policies work? I’m nervous about just signing just anything. I’ve been estranged from these people for nearly 15 years. Do I take my copy of the will to a lawyer? Can they gain more access to everything going on? I’m in IL- my grandparents died in Iowa. Thank you

Edit: to clarify grandma and step grandma are the same person.
