I Was “laid Off” After Sharing Mental Health Struggles With My Employer

A couple of weeks ago, I shared with my manager that I was going through a mental health crisis ( major depression). The reason why I did it, is because I wanted to “explain” why I might’ve not been giving my best, and that I needed certain accommodations in order to attend therapy sessions and doctors appointments. I’m talking about a small company, something like 7 direct employees. After sharing with my manager, she immediately told the company’s owner, who later told me that “what helped him in the past was to work even more and harder”, “that I should occupy my mind with more work” and things like that. If you’ve been depressed before, you might know that you don’t even want to do what you enjoy, much less “work more”, there’s just no energy for that. Anyway, a week later they called me saying that they were “laying me off” because “they felt with the changes in the company, they wouldn’t have work for me to do”. ???? The problem is that all of this were discussed either in person or video call, and I do not have anything documented in writing, only my diagnosis and the timeline…
Yesterday, after telling a friend what happened, she mentioned that this is likely illegal, and that I should seek legal advice. I’m now seriously thinking about it, but have no idea if I would be able to do much. I’m now unemployed, no insurance when I needed the most, and have no idea what to do next. Just for context, I am in Washington state.
Thanks for any help! ????????
