How Can I Verify I’m Speaking To A Detective?

Location: Massachusetts

I am the witness of a crime. I filed a report with the appropriate department, and was contacted by a detective. She asked me for information and the evidence, and provided a secured link to upload everything.

The next day, I got a call from another detective, stating the case has been transferred to another jurisdiction. He referred to the first detective by name so I believed he was aware of the details and it wasn’t a scam. The officer asked me to send the evidence via text message.

I received a call today from the same detective to provide an update on the case and asked if I’d be available for an interview next week. I agreed to meet, and he said he’d call me after thanksgiving to schedule a time.

I have his name, phone number, and email, and was able to verify that this is an actual police officer in Massachusetts.

While I don’t want to assume he’s lying, I just want to be sure I am speaking with the appropriate person due to the extremely sensitive details of the case.

I think what threw me off is he said “interview” as opposed to “statement” — which my understanding is a witness would give a statement, not an interview.

I called the police department to verify, and they told me I’d need to call headquarters during business hours because it was being handled by a specific unit and not local police.
