Got A Letter From The Police Impound That They Have My Car, But I Sold It A Year Ago.

I’m in upstate New York and need some advice: I got a letter saying the police impound has a car that I sold on fb marketplace over a year ago.
I am going to be the first to admit that I fucked up here. I was in the middle of a move and some other big life things and failed to turn in the plates. I just found them in a box.
What’s the best way to go about detangling myself from this? Do I walk into the DMV and say “I sold this over a year ago, here are the plates, it’s not my problem”? That sounds too easy.
Is this something I can do myself, or is this lawyer territory?
