Domestic Partnership

Location: Washington, USA

Hello, I live in the US in Washington (not D.C.) and am trying to register with my boyfriend as a domestic partner since we have lived together for two and a half years now but we have hit a bump. My current insurance from my parents will expire sometime next year and I am unable to sign up on his for this upcoming year. The important parts are this:

  • We currently rent from his mother, we live in a split level home and live in the basement.
  • There is no official lease since she has always made it clear that the only way we would ever be kicked out is if the bank takes the home.
  • The domestic partnership paperwork requires a lease, mortgage coupons, or our names on the deed and she doesn't want to quitclaim us onto the deed (i don't blame her, i get it)
  • It's specifically listed that renting from a family member does not count (for some weird reason)
  • The thing is that she does own several actual companies, some small and some larger and has offered to draw up a lease between the company and us two.

Would that be okay? Technically we would be paying the rent to a company, instead of a family member.

Just additional info: As a household, we make too much for me to qualify for any sort of medicare or other cheaper state assisted health insurance, however I make the least in the home (only about 1,700-1,900 per month) or else I'd just do that.

Any advice over the legality of such an agreement is really appreciated. I don't want him to risk his job for this or risk getting him in any legal trouble but I struggle to separate morality, ethics, and legality.
