Can The Company I Work For Continue To Ask For Proof Of Marriage For Benefits? (same Sex Couple)

My husband and I have been married since 2015. My company recognizes same sex marriages for health benefits and my husband has been a dependent on my insurance since.

A few years ago, the benefits center dropped my husband from insurance with absolutely no notice stating we had to prove we were married. We had sent in the requirements when we were originally married. They could not explain why he was removed, but I had to send in proof we were married for a second time. I was annoying but I resent in the work to show we are married. He was reinstated to my benefits.

Yesterday, I received a letter from my company stating my husband will be removed from benefits again if we don’t sent in proof of marriage. I cannot tell you how offended and annoyed I am! Does this happen to straight married couples??

I have asked my peers and even my boss if they have ever had to do this. My boss told me she has never had to do anything like this in her 30 years of marriage.

Is this a form of discrimination on behalf of my company? It certainly feels like it is! Do I have any options? Or do I just have to accept my company needs gay people to prove they are married every few years??

EDIT: Thank you to those who replied with kindness and information. I’m relieved it seems, for the most part, married gay couples have the same annoyances as straight couples do. I feel better about the situation!
