Can I Be Trespassed For Collecting My Property From Somebody Else's Property?

I entered the business Im contracted at to quit 2 hours before opening. The employer tried to hold my check hostage and put it in their office desk (this office I am regularly allowed to enter), and they (or anyone else) were not present to tell me I could not do otherwise.
So I went in the office, grabbed my check (and the rest of my personal belongings), and left. I then informed them I was quitting. I think it is also worth noting that, regularly, my check is placed upon my station for when I return to work; NOT kept in their desk.
Now Im hearing from other workers theyre trying to trespass me for entering their office. Any grounds to this, and are there any actual penalties I should be aware of?
