Are We Legally Entitled To Personal Belongings In A Repossessed Vehicle?

Card image cap

I (30F) had spent the weekend with my mom for Mother's Day. Did not realize I left my purse with my wallet, charger, headphones, and my car keys etc in the backseat until I went to leave this morning. Upon going to grab it I noticed the car was gone. My mom admitted she had not been paying and we found out it was repossessed in the middle of the night.

We ended up finding out the car was 4 hours away. Great. We asked about getting personal belongings out of the vehicle and they said they will not release any items until the car is paid in full. Upon contacting the lender, we are being told we can get our things at any time. However, the repo company is refusing us access.

I am not typically this careless with my things. I had bought my mom a ton of groceries, household essentials and through the hustle and bustle of getting everything out I forgot about my purse.

Obviously, I now have no form of ID, no credit cards, and no car keys to even drive to the DMV and get a replacement card.

Google is giving me mixed answers "they do not have to give you anything" vs "yes they legally have to give you your items". They have resorted to simply hanging up on us now when we call. The reviews for this specific company all state the exact same issues and how they ended up needing to get lawyers/police involvement. Even THEN a lot of items were stolen by the time they were allowed access.

She is in South Carolina. Lender is insisting we are allowed to get our personal belongings, however, they obviously can't do much if the company that physically has the car isn't allowing us to....

Is there anything we can do or am I pretty much screwed at this point?
