[us-mo] We Have Accidentally Paid Property Taxes On Land That We Don’t Own For 15 Years. The County Will Not Reimburse Us.

The land is a 3 acre plot right next to our 96 acres. The county accidentally included the 3 acre lot with our 96 acres. We have been paying the taxes on this for 15 years. When we discovered this, the county says they cannot reimburse us. What are our options?
Not sure how to reply to each person but thanks everyone for the comments. Talked with a local real estate attorney. He advised us that we can decide to proceed or not in going to court over this matter. We can sue the county or the landowners, but it could possibly cost more than what we may collect. We cannot put a lien on the property unless we get a judgment which means going to court. We cannot get adverse possession as there were not enough requirements met, although we weren’t sure if that was something we would want to do. Thanks again. We are thinking over whether we will go to court.
