Will Smes And Mid-size Companies Really Let Go Of Agencies Because Of Ai, Or Will Agencies Just Become Leaner?

Card image cap

I’ve been thinking about how AI is changing agency work, especially for SMEs and mid-size companies.

A lot of people say AI will replace agencies, freelancers, designers, developers, media buyers, SEO teams, and social media teams. I get the argument. AI can now write content, generate website copy, assist with design, help with code, analyze campaign data, create reports, and speed up a lot of repetitive work.

But I’m not fully convinced that most SMEs and mid-size companies will completely let go of agencies.

My current view is this:

AI will make the work faster, but clients will still need people who can make decisions, take accountability, and build trust.

For example:

In web design and development, AI can help create layouts, write code, debug, and speed up production. But someone still has to understand the brand, the business goals, the customer journey, the integrations, the trade-offs, the QA, and what actually works in the real world.

In Google Ads and Meta Ads, AI can automate bidding, targeting, creative variations, and reporting. But someone still has to decide the strategy, interpret what is happening, challenge bad data, manage budgets, explain performance, and be accountable when money is being spent.

In SEO and AI visibility, AI can help with research, content briefs, technical checks, and optimization. But someone still has to decide what is credible, what the brand should stand for, how to earn authority, and how to turn visibility into business results.

In social media, AI can create drafts and ideas quickly. But someone still needs to understand culture, timing, nuance, community management, brand risk, and whether something feels human or generic.

So maybe the real change is not “clients will stop hiring agencies.”

Maybe the change is:

Agencies will need to become leaner, faster, more strategic, and more accountable.

The cost of some services may go down because AI allows smaller teams to do more. But I still think many business owners will want a human partner who can think with them, own outcomes, and help them make better decisions.

For SME and mid-size business owners here:

Are you planning to reduce agency/freelancer support because of AI?

Or do you still see value in having humans in the loop for strategy, execution, quality control, and accountability?

And for marketers, agency owners, and freelancers:

Where do you think clients will still pay for human expertise?

Curious to hear honest takes.
