Seeking Advice On Career Trajectory
So I’m (29M) evaluating a few career path options and need some advice. I have a BSME, MBA, background in project engineering and lean manufacturing. I have a wife and 3 daughters under 3yo.
Took some profiling tests recently as well: Predictive Index = Maverick, Culture Index = Rainmaker, 16P = ENTJ, AIMS (when I was 17) = Structural Generalist. Also, after reading The Challenge Sale, my wife and I can tell you confidently that I’m the Challenger.
Here’s what I’m wrestling with, and I put the level of risk I think each is at the end of each (X):
I was approached by a wholesale plumbing distributor, who wants to potentially bring me on in a ‘fast track’ to expand from their plumbing line into hvac, and then from there, once a decent book of business is built (after about 2 years from me starting), to have me branch off and start my own location as the president. I would take a pay cut for the first 3 years, but then would see substantial increases y/y form profit share / dividends, as well as have 30% equity with crazy amounts of uphill potential. (1)
I have a million entrepreneurial ideas and want to pursue them. From apps, to 3d printing, to design freelance work, to illustration and personally-designed products. My wife makes GOOD money doing photography, and although we both (her more than me) want her to stay home with the kids full time, she’s willing to pick up shoots to help out if we go this route, especially since my more flexible schedule could allow me to solo-parent while she shoots rather than her having to schedule and pay a baby sitter, which is no fun. Also, my father in law started a company that sells windows and my MIL mentioned to my wife that he had stated that he thinks I’d do a good job selling for him. Another option to throw into the mix. I’m currently making good money (6 figures in a cheap town) in a job that does NOT match with my aptitudes and desired career trajectory. However, I recently met up with a friend (41M) who loves doing operations work, and after we talked for 3 hours and loved every second, we grew in a lot of confidence in the idea that we could be successful starting an ops consulting company for small (50-200 person) companies in our town. We’re both confident that we’d be better at it than most of our competition, and with the small size and proximity we’d be incredibly agile and could undercut large bloated consulting firms on most metrics. That said, the idea was to keep working our day jobs for 6 months, flush out the entire business from products to sales, and then once we book our first client, quit our jobs and full send it. (2)
Really would appreciate any input.
