Plus, Tsubaki and Holy Basil collaborate, a new cookbook “for the girls,” and more
Viral Korean salt bread pop-up Out of Ordi is opening a permanent bakery in Koreatown, where husband-and-wife team Gemma Lee and Luis Kim will offer their plush, savory rolls on a consistent basis. Salt bread was popularized in Korean bakery and cafes as savory, buttery rolls often topped with corn, cream, black sesame, and more. The pop-up started at Lee and Kim’s home in June 2024; at first, the pair didn’t have the money to open their own space so they operated out of their kitchen. As the business grew, it became too big for their home, prompting them to look into moving out into its own location.
When the bakery opens, the duo will sell their best-selling eight pack with flavors like original, everything seasoning, black sesame, corn, matcha, and pistachio. They also plan to offer specials like yuzu, alongside drinks and salt bread sandwiches. Out of Ordi’s opening is currently slated for April 2025.
Holy Tsubaki!
Echo Park izakaya Tsubaki and Thai restaurant Holy Basil are joining forces for a night on March 18 for a collaborative dinner. Tsubaki chef de cuisine Klementine Song and Holy Basil chef Wedchayan “Deau” Arpapornnopparat will be serving a 10-course menu with dishes like santen mori (blue prawn aguachile, dry-aged kingfish, scallop crudo), fish and rice onigiri, bittermelon soup with clams, and moo krob yakisoba. Reservations go live at noon on Monday, March 10, and the dinner is priced at $115 per person.
A Jumbo’s Clown Room dancer drops a cookbook “for the girls”
Those who have been to LA’s iconic Jumbo’s Clown Room have probably seen Scarlett Kapella, a popular dancer, photographer, and artist. The Los Angeles Times reports her latest venture is Wine Me, Dine Me, 69 Me, a cookbook that features recipes from her alongside photography of her fellow dancers. Recipes include a key lime Pervert Pie and a Freak in the Sheets Cake. This isn’t Kapella’s first venture into the culinary world; she’s previously hosted a series called Topless Tapas with friend Izzie Pop and the late chef Jonathan Whitener of All Day Baby and Here’s Looking at You. Copies of the cookbook can be purchased by DMing Kapella on Instagram.

One of LA’s best burger spots, Golden State, is closing after 16 years on Friday, March 7. The restaurant first opened in 2009 along Fairfax, quickly becoming a favorite in the neighborhood for smash burgers, lamb burgers, and more. In 2021, Golden State shuttered its standalone location and moved into Cofax Coffee just down the street, operating in the evenings. While this may be the end of Golden State for now, the restaurant is considering a move into the Culver City Cofax for lunch.
